Perdigon flies are Spanish nymph patterns with thin bodies embedded in UV resin and no legs/dubbing, sinking quickly through water. This allows anglers to quickly reach the bottom, where fish are feeding. It's most effective in fast water, catching salmonids due to rapid sinking rate. It's usually used in euro nymphing with a French leader, though anglers may need to figure out the most successful style for their local river conditions.
Depending on the season I tie my nymphs in the following weight/ bead and size:
Usually, I use 2 flies, the heavier on a dropper and the lighter and smaller on top.⻥
Perdigon flies are easy to tie and you likely have the necessary materials already. You can use any type of fly fishing hook in sizes 16 and 18, although jig hooks are becoming much more mainstay.
The basic materials for Perdigon nymphs are:
You can also use completely natural materials, such as peacock feather.
Special materials made for Perdigon nymphs include HENDS PERDIGON PEARL BODY. These have a high-iridescence (changing) shine. They come in several shades, which become even more varied when covered with UV glue.
For more natural Perdigon variations, try using synthetic body quills — as opposed to stripped natural quills like peacock herl. This binding material is translucent, allowing for gradual layering to create bodies that transition from light to dark color. Use light (white) thread with Body Quills, as the material needs a light base for the correct color transition. You can experiment with the base layer under Body Quill, such as Perdigon Pearl Body or other tinsel.

A big nymph can scare the fish and will snag the bottom very often. Small is better — my biggest sized perdigon is #14-smallest sized is tied on #22-my efficient sizes according with my style are #16-18. I reserve size 12 for heavy droppers instead of adding lead weights to the line.
